Drinking water is not sufficient for acne-prone skin

Human body consists of 70% water. Thus, not only is water a critical nutrient itself, it also acts as a carrier in delivering other nutrients throughout the body system.

Water intake is vital as it plays a role in various body functions including digestion, regulation, absorption and circulation. Above all, water assists the liver and kidneys in detoxification purposes.

Water is the essential to life, undeniably. However, water is served to other internal organs before it reaches the skin’s surface. People can drink sufficient fluids to compensate for the functions required by the body system, but it does not account for water loss from the skin – Transepidermal water loss (TWL or TEWL).

Our skin excretes bodily waste through the pores and in the occasion of an overloaded liver and kidneys due to external causes (i.e. stress, emotions and other environmental factors), there can be an increase in toxins released through the skin. If toxins are not disposed properly, skin deposits them within the pores.

Effect of an oily and dehydrated skin

When the skin is heavily covered in oil relative to water, pores on the skin become sticky and contribute to congestion.

The effect of excessive sebum production and toxins trapped within, is a mixture that promotes bacteria. As the bacteria digest this mixture, they result to swelling, redness, formation of pus and a breakout. With all that explained, adequate water is important from inside out. It is also critical to have a good balance of water content to oil on the skin surface to fend off a conceiving breakout.
